In western Norway it rains two days out of three. So the most important room at Birkely is outside: a covered walkway that wraps the courtyard, where the children play dry in all weathers and change their boots before going in.
Classrooms have low windows at the children’s height and deep sills to sit in. The untreated pine outside has already turned silver.
The roof is the playground.
