Why we still build models by hand

Every project in the studio starts with a site model: the rock, the trees, the neighbours, at 1:500. It lives on the long table for the whole project, and everyone who walks past moves something.

A model is honest in a way a rendering never is. You cannot hide a clumsy roof behind a sunset. You see immediately where the shadow falls at three o’clock in December.

Three models per project

  • The site model, which stays on the table from the first sketch to the last meeting.
  • Working models in cardboard, made in an afternoon and thrown away without regret.
  • One final model in basswood, which the client takes home.

Sketches and models go together; neither is finished first.
